The M270B Light Repeating Phaser is a
light general-purpose machine gun. It can be mounted on a bipod,
tripod, aircraft, or vehicle.
The M270B supports the rifleman in
both offensive and defensive operations. The M270B provides the
heavy volume of close and continuous fire needed to accomplish the
mission, and is used to engage targets beyond the range of
individual weapons, with controlled and accurate fire. The
long-range, close defensive, and final protective fires delivered by
the M270B form an integral part of a unit's defensive fires.
The M270B, lovingly called "The Pig"
by 270 gunners, is based on the EVA phaser rifle frame, but the
resemblance stops there. Internally the M270B is built for heavy
sustained fire with reinforced and replaceable emitter crystals and
three rotating pre-fire chambers.
The pre-fire chambers automatically
rotate after every 150 shots to help reduce the chance of a thermal
shut down.
Although the M270B has extensive
internal heat shielding, it still produces a massive amount of heat
when fired continuously (at cyclic rate), which tends to warp and
crack the emitter crystal. To reduce the wear and tear on the
crystals, the upper barrel assembly can be easily switched out after
a number of shots, depending on the rate of fire.
