The JXR-33 SpecialOps Combat Assault
Rifle (SCAR), is a lightweight, pulsed phaser, select fire, shoulder
fired, modular weapon system, with a collapsible stock. The JXR-33
shares almost 80% of internal components with the M-116A2 assault
rifle. The JXR-33 has some features that were found missing on most
of Starfleet and SFMC weapons, such as: flip up iron sights, a
butt-stock, and an integral BF scrambler.
While some consider iron sights to be
archaic in an age of advanced sensors, a Ranger needs a low-tech
alternative if the targeting systems become damaged. The solid stock
means that the soldier can steady the weapon against his shoulder,
and it also means that he will naturally look down the axis of the
weapon and through the sighting device.
The JXR-33 features a Rail Interface
System (RIS) that makes all components quick change. Complementing
the JXR-33 are two attachable weapon systems, the SPW-201A1 Weapon
Mounted Grenade Launcher and a modified M-12A4 Combat Shotgun. The
SPW-201A1 incorporates a swing out barrel design with integrated
sight, and is capable of firing all 40mm grenades, while the M-12A4
is capable of firing both lethal and non-lethal shotgun shells, as
well as specially-designed breaching shells. Both weapons are
forward mounted underneath the barrel, and can be installed by the
operator in minutes without tools.
Attention has also been paid to the
look and feel of the JXR-33. Forward hand guards incorporate
non-slip materials to improve weapon handling and retention. The
JXR-33's non-metallic components are manufactured from fiber
reinforced plastic polymers which can be molded in numerous colors,
and can be removed or replaced by the operator without specialized
tools. In other words, no matter what environment you’re in, the
weapon's "skin" can be changed to blend in.
The JXR-33 has a selective fire
feature that enables the weapon to be fired in either single
(semi-auto) or three round bursts. The semi-auto mode allows greater
accuracy in hitting “critical targets” at the beginning of an
assault, and the three round burst offers greater armor penetrating
ability with less energy cost and with less heat than sustained beam
phasers. The pulses emerge so quickly that the third pulse is out of
the barrel before the recoil from the first shot throws the gun
noticeably off-axis, so the net effect is that all three shots hit
in a very small grouping, thus increasing their chances of
penetration.
